In 1978 John Paulsen began selling real estate in Hutchinson with his family's real estate company. After becoming a broker in 1981, he owned and operated this real estate firm until 2004.

John has served on the board of directors for the Hutchinson Housing and Redevelopment Association, and has been active in the Hutchinson Area United Way, The Hutchinson Ambassadors, Jaycees, Rotary Club, and various groups at his church.He is a member of the Minneapolis Area Association of Realtors, The Minneapolis Multiple Listing Service, and has his Graduate Realtor Institute designation.
